Davis Valley Distillery Store and Tasting Room Opens
September 08, 2014 – Davis Valley Distillery and Winery has announced that its new Virginia ABC Store and Tasting Room will open at 10 a.m. Friday, September 12. The distillery and winery are located on Davis Valley Road just off I-81 Exit 54, also known as the Groseclose, Virginia Exit.
The distillery is situated in the east end of the Davis Valley Winery building.
The Winery has been in business for several years and produces a variety of red, white and blush wines, several of which have won state-wide awards. The new distillery is a result of what Davis Valley’s owner, Rusty Cox of Saltville, Virginia, calls a “very long labor of love.”
“We began working on adding a distillery operation to the winery over three years ago,” Rusty said. “It has been a lengthy process of research, licensing, equipment acquisition and perfecting our distilling processes.”
Rusty, and his wife and co-owner, Ruth Rhea Cox, say they are very pleased with the spirits now in production and soon to be available to the public; first at the distillery’s ABC Store and Tasting Room beginning September 12 and then statewide through Virginia’s ABC stores. “However, all the credit goes to our staff,” Ruth Rhea is quick to point out.
The distillery produces five varieties of corn whisky moonshine under the label, Appalachian Moon. In addition to the non-flavored “original recipe” moonshine, there are four fruit-flavored Appalachian Moon moonshines: Apple Pie, Peach Pie, Strawberry Pie and Cherry Pie.
Also in production are Virginia Frost vodka and Davis Valley Old Virginia bourbon. All of these products, except the bourbon, will be available for sampling and purchase, when the store opens. “We have to keep the bourbon ageing in oak barrels for another 18 months or so,” Rusty said. “It’s not bourbon until it’s aged two years.”
Davis Valley’s Virginia Frost vodka has been accepted for sale in 100 of Virginia’s ABC stores statewide and two of its flavored moonshines will be in select ABC stores statewide beginning by October 1.
The Davis Valley Distillery staff is local. Tom Copenhaver of Marion and Dewey Snavely of Glade Spring are in charge of the distilling and production operations. Susan Aker of Groseclose is Tasting Rooms Manager and Kayla Armstrong, also of Groseclose, is the Distillery Store and Tasting Room hostess.
