Eco-Escapes

Interested in an eco-friendly getaway? There are many options within our region to get into the outdoors, in an Eco-Friendly manner.

In the town of Chilhowie, Nature’s Powers Outdoor Education Center hosts family-oriented eco-friendly seminars from January into July. Get out in the woods every month to explore what’s new. These walks are for all ages. Cost is $2.00 per person with children uner age 5 free. No reservations are required.

You can also take a deep breath of fresh mountain air – while on your bike – coasting down the mountain from Whitetop Mountain for 18 leisurely miles. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a great opportunity for the entire family to see over 40 species of birds, a historic path of the old railroad bed through the mountains, and plenty for wildlife enthusiasts and recreation nuts alike.

Have GPS? Try Geocaching! Southwest Virginia and Smyth County have plenty of interesting outdoor opportunities for the avid geocacher to creatively stash away some treasures for the next adventurer to find.

The object of Geocaching is to find the hidden container filled with a logbook, pencil and the occasional prize. Larger caches might contain maps, books, toys, even money! When you take something from the cache you are honor-bound to leave something else in its place. Usually cache hunters will report their individual cache experiences on the Internet.
